There is no special white garment for women as there is for men. Your own abaya, a long dress, or even a shalwar kameez all qualify, provided the clothing is loose enough not to describe your shape and you are not wearing perfume. The rules that matter are about what you must not do, not about what you must buy.

That single point causes more confusion than anything else in Umrah preparation. Women arrive at the Miqat expecting to change into something, the way the men around them are changing into two white sheets, and there is nothing to change into. What follows is what the state of Ihram actually requires of women, what breaks it, and how the rules work in practice across a week in Makkah.

What Is Ihram for Women?

Ihram is a state, not a garment. Entering it means making the intention to perform Umrah and reciting the Talbiyah at or before the Miqat boundary, after which a specific set of prohibitions applies until you complete your rites and exit.

For men, entering that state comes with a required uniform of two unstitched white sheets. For women it does not. The Prophet, peace be upon him, permitted women to wear their ordinary clothing in Ihram, which is why you will see women from every country dressed differently at the Kaaba, all of them equally in Ihram.

What your clothing must do is cover the body properly, stay loose, and not be perfumed. What it must not do is cover your face or your hands.

What Should Women Wear for Ihram?

Wear something you can walk fifteen kilometres in, wash in a hotel sink, and have dry by the following morning. That is the real specification, and it rules out most of what people pack.

Item

Quantity

What actually works

Abaya or long dress

2 to 3

Lightweight synthetic. Dries overnight. Cotton holds sweat and stays damp.

Hijab / scarf

3 to 4

Plain, breathable, no embellishment that catches on other people in crowds.

Underscarf or cap

4 to 6

More than you think. In summer these need changing twice a day.

Socks

5 to 7 pairs

Feet are covered in the mosque. Marble floors are cold at night, hot by day.

Footwear

1 pair

Closed, flat, already broken in. Not new. Not sandals.

Safety pins

A few

Closed-style, not open pins. Open pins are a hazard in Tawaf crowds.

Colour is not a requirement. Women are not obliged to wear white and most do not. Black, navy, grey and brown are all fine. What matters is that the fabric is not so thin that it is transparent in bright sunlight, which is a genuine problem with cheap black abayas in the Makkah sun and one you will only discover once you are standing in it.

Our complete Umrah packing list covers the wider kit, including toiletries, medication and what to buy in Makkah rather than carry from home.

Can Women Cover Their Face During Ihram?

No. The face and the hands stay uncovered during Ihram. This is the one rule specific to women that has no equivalent for men, and it is the one most often misunderstood.

The prohibition is on the garment itself. A niqab, a face veil, or gloves are not permitted while you are in the state of Ihram. This is not a relaxation of modesty, it is a specific requirement of the ritual state, and it applies from the Miqat until you exit Ihram.

Where scholars have historically permitted an exception is passing coverage: if a woman is in a mixed crowd and wishes to shield her face, the majority position allows her to draw a cloth down from the top of her head so that it hangs over the face without being fastened as a veil. The distinction is between wearing a face garment, which is prohibited, and letting fabric fall across the face, which is not. Practice varies between schools of thought, so follow the guidance of the scholar you normally take from.

The same logic applies to hands. No gloves, but you may cover your hands with a sleeve or the edge of your garment.

What Breaks Ihram for Women?

The prohibitions of Ihram apply to men and women alike, with only the clothing rules differing. Breaking one does not usually invalidate your Umrah, but most carry an expiation, which is why they are worth knowing before you go rather than after.

Prohibited in Ihram

Applies to

Note

Wearing perfume or scented products

Both

Includes scented soap, deodorant, lotion. Check labels for “fragrance-free”, not “unscented”.

Covering the face or hands

Women specifically

No niqab, no gloves.

Cutting hair or nails

Both

Deliberate removal. Hair that falls out naturally while washing is not an issue.

Marital relations

Both

The most serious prohibition. Invalidates Umrah if it occurs before the rites are complete.

Proposing or contracting marriage

Both

Prohibited while in Ihram.

Hunting or killing game

Both

Rarely relevant, but part of the classical list.

Note what is not on that list. Washing is permitted, including washing your hair, as long as the soap is unscented. Changing your clothes is permitted for women, because there is no fixed garment to preserve. Wearing jewellery is permitted. Using a phone is permitted. Sitting under shade is permitted. A surprising amount of what people worry about is not restricted at all.

What Happens If Your Period Starts?

You can still enter Ihram while menstruating. You make the intention, you recite the Talbiyah, you wear your Ihram clothing, and you cross the Miqat exactly as anyone else would. Menstruation does not prevent you entering the state of Ihram.

What it prevents is Tawaf. Tawaf around the Kaaba requires ritual purity, so it must wait until menstruation ends. Since Sa’i follows Tawaf in sequence, that waits too. You remain in Ihram, with all its prohibitions in force, until you are able to complete the rites.

The practical consequence is a scheduling one, and it is the single strongest argument for building slack into your itinerary rather than booking the tightest possible trip. A woman whose period begins on arrival for a five-day trip may find the window closes before she can perform Tawaf.

Some women take hormonal medication to delay menstruation for the duration of the journey. This is common and widely considered permissible, but it needs arranging with your GP several weeks before departure, not the week you fly. If you are planning around this, our guide to the best time to perform Umrah covers how seasonal crowding affects how much flexibility your schedule realistically has.

Everything other than Tawaf and Sa’i remains available to you. You can make dua, you can recite, you can sit in the Haram, you can travel to Madinah. Masjid al-Nabawi and the Ziyarat sites are not affected.

When Do Women Exit Ihram?

After completing Tawaf and Sa’i, a woman exits Ihram by cutting a small amount of hair. The requirement is to trim roughly a fingertip’s length from the end of the hair. Gather it, cut once, and that is sufficient.

Women do not shave their heads. The shaving option applies only to men. Trimming a fingertip’s length is the complete requirement, and it can be done in your hotel room by yourself or by a female relative.

Once that is done, the prohibitions lift. Perfume, normal clothing, niqab if you wear one, all permitted again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do women wear Ihram for Umrah?
Yes, but not a special garment. Women enter the state of Ihram wearing their own modest, loose clothing. There is no white two-piece equivalent for women.

How to do Ihram for women?
Perform ghusl or wudu before departure, put on clean modest clothing with no perfume, and at or before the Miqat make the intention for Umrah and recite the Talbiyah. From that moment you are in Ihram.

What breaks Ihram for women?
Perfume, covering the face or hands, cutting hair or nails, marital relations, and contracting marriage. The clothing rules are the only prohibitions that differ from men.

What is the Ihram for women?
It is a state entered at the Miqat, not an item of clothing. The clothing requirement is only that it be modest, loose, unperfumed, and leave the face and hands uncovered.

What not to do in Ihram for women?
Do not wear a niqab or gloves, do not apply any perfumed product including scented soap or deodorant, and do not cut hair or nails until you have completed Tawaf and Sa’i.

Can women wear black Ihram?
Yes. There is no colour requirement for women. Black, navy, grey and brown are all common and all acceptable.

Can I wear socks and shoes during Ihram?
Yes. The footwear restriction applies to men, not women. Women may wear closed shoes and socks throughout.

Can I wear jewellery in Ihram?
Yes. Rings, bangles and earrings are permitted for women in Ihram. Avoid anything valuable in Tawaf crowds for practical reasons rather than ritual ones.

Can women perform Umrah without a Mahram?
Saudi Arabia removed the mahram requirement for women aged 18 and over, who may now apply for an Umrah visa and travel independently or in an organised group. Whether you should is a separate question from whether you may, and schools of thought differ. Check the current position on the official Nusuk platform before booking, as visa policy is reviewed periodically.

Can I use scented shampoo before entering Ihram?
Yes. Perfume applied before you enter Ihram is permitted even if the scent lingers afterwards. The prohibition is on applying it once you are in the state of Ihram.

The rules of Ihram for women are narrower than most people expect. Modest loose clothing, an uncovered face and hands, no perfume, and no cutting of hair or nails until the rites are done. Everything else is ordinary life, performed in an extraordinary place.

If you are planning Umrah from the UK and want an itinerary that builds in proper flexibility, view our Umrah packages or speak to the team about arranging your dates.
